Molecule Role Annotation Deletion of the pga locus (the pgaABC genes) led to loss of the strong biofilm phenotype, which was restored by complementation (Choi et al., 2009).

pgaB encodes a predicted 510-amino-acid protein with a putative polysaccharide deacetylase domain. It shares 33%, 31%, and 37% identity with E. coli PgaB, Y. pestis HmsF, and B. pertussis BpsB, respectively. All these proteins have putative deacetylase activities. In Y. pestis, HmsF was isolated from the outer membrane by cellular fractionation. E. coli PgaB is predicted to be an outer membrane lipoprotein that, along with PgaA, is necessary for PNAG export (Choi et al., 2009).
