Molecule Role Annotation An isogenic spa deletion variant S. aureus Newman ÃŽâ€spa was generated. After intraperitoneal challenge with 2 × 108 CFU of wild-type S. aureus Newman, 60% of animals succumbed to challenge. In contrast, animals infected with the isogenic mutant resulted in only 25% mortality. In addition, the spa mutant displayed a consistent survival defect when examined in naive mouse blood. These results suggest that SpA is a crucial virulence factor for lethal infections of S. aureus in mice (Kim et al., 2010).
