Frequently Asked Questions

1. Question: Who are the potential users of the HazARD database?

Answer: HazARD is designed for use by researchers, laboratory animal veterinarians, and occupational health professionals when planning and implementing animal research involving hazardous substances. The comparative medicine aspects will facilitate the work of researchers involved in translational research.

2. Question: What classes of hazardous substances are examined within this database system?

Answer: HazARD currently examines infectious agents including bacteria (e.g., Brucella), viruses (e.g., vaccinia virus), bacterial toxins (e.g., Botulinum toxin), and chemical substances (e.g., MPTP). Select recombinant viral vectors will soon be included.

3. Question: Who can submit data for potential inclusion in the database?

Answer: We have created a user-friendly, web-based data submission system. Anyone is welcomed to either submit information on a new substance or to propose changes or additions to existing data.

4. Question: I have only a small amount of information that is not included in the database system. Should I bother to submit this or are you only look for large submission entries?

Answer: Submission of all pertinent information is appropriate, regardless of the volume. The one or two facts that you can contribute may be exactly the information that another individual is searching for. The data submission system has been designed to be as easy and painless as possible so information submission should not be difficult or time consuming.

5. Question: How does the data submission system work?

Answer: All submitted data is immediately stored in the database but is initially invisible to the public. A knowledgeable data reviewer then critically evaluates the submitted data. Once approved, the information will be publicly posted and available for query by system users. Information supported by published, peer-reviewed research will be clearly differentiated from information from personal, unpublished observations . All contributors will be credited for their submissions.

6. Question: Can I become a HazARD data submission reviewer?

Answer: Yes. Please contact us if you have an interest in and expertise with one or more substances included in the database. Your involvement and help is greatly appreciated not only by the HazARD team, but also by system users who will directly benefit from your contributions.
